In Jeremy Hoevenaar’s poems, the automatic language and sinister jargon of techno-finance are bent against themselves, capturing the “emergent multiple weathers” of the present in bewildered and breathless syntax. Not Guilty starts here, takes a deep breath, and then extends this line into the private depths of the self, the corner from which terror subsides and the “holy mystery of adjacency” can appear. Isolation and shame give way to ritual and repair, as the poems circle the block, doing “unseen / wheelies of light.”
